To be an Olympic bobsled athlete, you’ve got to do a lot of speed work, a lot of power movements, a lot of strength – things that we do in the weight room.

When you’re working on speed, you want to focus a lot on your core, obviously, because you need a lot of stability. We do a lot of what we call Olympic lifts, you know, a lot of power cleans, snatches, the clean and jerk, explosion-type movements. As a bobsledder, we’re mostly just concerned with sprinting so we train as 100-meter sprinters. In the weight room, we basically train as strength athletes, like football players do. When you’re focusing on the core, that just hits the abs as well, so, we do a lot of swinging type movements.

Flexibility is definitely key, so I go through a routine of stretching before every single workout – and I hold each stretch for 30 seconds.

When you’re doing the type of workouts that I do, you’ve got to replenish those amino acids and make sure you get some good quality protein in.
